What is the Waterwise Toilet Rebate?

The Waterwise Toilet Rebate is a Water Corporation initiative that rewards households for swapping out old, inefficient toilets for modern water-efficient models. The rebates on offer are:

• $400 when you replace an eligible toilet with a WELS 4-star or higher rated toilet
• $500 when you upgrade to a WELS 5-star toilet with an integrated hand basin

You can claim for up to two toilets per property, which means a household replacing two old units with 5-star models could get $1,000 back.

The offer runs from 1 July 2026 to 31 May 2027, but here’s the catch: it’s limited to 400 rebate allocations. Once they’re gone, they’re gone. If you’ve been putting off replacing a tired old loo, this is your sign to get moving.

Why is Water Corporation paying people to replace toilets?

It comes down to water savings. Toilets are one of the biggest water users in the home, and the difference between an old model and a modern one is bigger than most people realise. An old single flush toilet can use up to 12 litres per flush, while a modern WELS 4-star dual flush uses as little as 3 to 4.5 litres. Over a year, that adds up to tens of thousands of litres saved per household.

Is your toilet eligible? Here’s how to check

This is the question we get asked most, and thankfully the check is something you can do yourself in about 30 seconds. The rebate applies to replacing two types of toilets:

1. Single flush toilets

If your toilet has just one button or one lever, it’s a single flush model and it qualifies. These are the easy ones to spot.

2. Dual flush toilets installed before 1995

This one needs a closer look. Dual flush toilets have two buttons (half flush and full flush), and only the older pre-1995 models are eligible. Here’s the trick to dating yours: look at the base of the toilet where it meets the floor. Pre-1995 dual flush toilets are secured to the floor with four bolts. If your toilet has fewer than four bolts at the base, it’s a newer model and won’t qualify.

You’ll also need to tick these boxes

• Your property is residential and connected to Water Corporation’s scheme water supply
• The application is made by the property owner or property manager
• The replacement toilet has a WELS water rating of 4 stars or higher
• The new toilet is installed by a licensed plumber

That last point is important. DIY installations are not eligible for the rebate, no matter how handy you are. The whole toilet suite needs to be replaced too, so swapping out just the cistern won’t qualify.

What you’ll need for your claim

Water Corporation asks for a few things when you apply, and missing any of them can hold up or void your rebate:

1. A paid, itemised receipt or tax invoice showing your property address, the toilet purchased, and that it was installed by a licensed plumber
2. Two “before” photos of your old toilet, taken from the front and the side, with the bolts at the base clearly visible
3. One “after” photo of the newly installed toilet, showing the surrounding floor
